ROYAL CENTER — Cass County sheriff's deputies have identified the woman who was found dead this morning on the Panhandle Pathway in Royal Center.
A man found Valerie Alisha Hartle, 23, Royal Center, on the path Monday morning and notified police at 6:30 a.m. Cass County Coroner George Franklin ruled the death a suicide. He declined to discuss the cause of death.
Sheriff’s deputies said Hartle was the mother of one child.
The Cass-Logansport Economic Development Organization appointed John Hipskind its interim director this week.
A dip in the Eel River almost turned deadly for two Logansport brothers Saturday after the current dragged them to the edge of a dam, where they held on until rescue workers arrived.

Mitch Figert, executive director at American Red Cross of North Central Indiana, announced a shelter has been created at the Logansport branch of the American Red Cross, 1200 W. Market, and should be open at 3 p.m. today.
The Eel River has surpassed its flood stage level near Logansport. As of 10:45 a.m., the river was at 9.9 feet, with the flood stage at 9 feet.
