Family continues a Walton tradition

New owners take on over the Dog Shed.

WALTON — For 30 years, the Dog Shed has served a variety of food and helped customers form memories as well.

Walton residents Mike and Kathy Collins have their own special memories from eating at the restaurant over the years.

Mike remembers stopping by after Little League games and said the Dog Shed was the place to hang out. As for Kathy, she remembers going to the restaurant after high school to eat with her friends.

Even though Mike never imagined the restaurant he used to go to when he was 11 years old would be his, the Collinses took over ownership of the restaurant at 506 N. Main St. Tuesday.

Dave and Andrea Foreman had owned the business for 10 years and her parents and another couple originally opened the Dog Shed in 1979.

According to Mike, the Foremans were ready for a change in their lives, which worked out for the Collinses.

“It’s something we wanted to do for awhile,” said Kathy. “The opportunity was there.”

The Collinses felt the restaurant had everything they were looking for, including a good atmosphere, good service and a small-town feel.

“We wanted something community oriented,” Mike added.

He also stressed how well it had been managed for the last 30 years, which made the Collinses even more proud to take it over.

The Dog Shed is the first business the husband and wife have owned and they are excited about interacting with the customers and helping to give back to the community.

No major changes will be made to the business and the staff is remaining the same.

“It’s been successful for 30 years,” Mike said. “We want to continue to run it exactly how it was.”

Main goals for the new business owners include keeping the business running as it has been and continuing to make it grow. The Collinses would like to see the same loyal customer from over the years, as well as knew ones.

While lunch time draws a large crowd, Mike and Kathy would like to see more people stop by during the evening for dinner. The restaurant offers a variety of food including, hot dogs, breadsticks, cheesesticks, nachos, chicken wings, salads, grilled chicken sandwiches, subs, onion rings, fries, homemade soup, and a variety of desserts.

The Collinses are looking forward to running their own business.

“It’s just a new adventure,” Kathy said.

Business hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The business can be reached at 574-626-2717.
