Baldwin attends annual tax seminar
Barry S. Baldwin of Baldwin Accounting Corp. attended the 57th annual Indiana Society of Accountants Tax and Management Seminar Oct. 26-27 in Indianapolis.
The seminar covered a variety of topics, including changes in tax laws effective this reporting year.
A continuing professional education program was offered and those attending all sessions earned 16 CPE credits. Accounting professionals in Indiana must acquire a statute set number of CPE credits in order to maintain their license to practice.

DeHaven joins Cass County Y staff
Anthony DeHaven recently joined the Cass County Family YMCA staff as the youth/family program director.
His background includes experience with Logansport Youth Baseball league, coaching and officiating responsibilities. He has served on the Logansport Youth Baseball executive board for three years, including two as league president.
DeHaven was born and raised in Logansport and is married Jennell. They have four children, Alex, 13, Hunter, 10, Garrett, 7, and Madison, 20 months.
Employees of month named at MCF
BUNKER HILL — Miami Correctional Facility named its employees of the month for September.
Maintenance foreman Bruce Friar was named employee of the month (non-custody); Sgt. Frank Kaicy was named supervisor of the month (custody or non-custody); and Officer Kathy Farnsworth was named custody officer of the month.
Friar, of Bunker Hill, was hired at MCF as a maintenance repairman 2 in September 2005 and promoted to a maintenance foreman 1 in June 2007.
Officer Kathy Farnsworth, of Logansport, was hired at MCF as an officer in March 2003.
Sgt. Frank Kaicy, of Logansport, was hired at MCF as an officer in August 2001 and promoted to sergeant in January 2004.
Purdue launches a new beef Web site
WEST LAFAYETTE — The Purdue University Beef Team launched a new Web site designed to be an information source for beef producers from Indiana and throughout the Midwest.
The Beef Center, www.thebeefcenter.com, hosts a wide range of production beef information in a variety of formats.
Producers can find Extension factsheets, YouTube videos, podcasts and PowerPoint presentations with narration on everything from nutrition and health to reproduction and waste management.
The information is organized and easy to find based on topic area. Online courses, such as the IQ+BEEF Quality Assurance program and the Fresh From the Farm freezer beef program, also can be accessed through the new Web site.

Applications for scholarship available
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation is currently accepting applications for the 2010 Young Entrepreneur Awards. High-school seniors with a flare for entrepreneurship are encouraged to apply online for a chance to win a scholarship valued from $1,000-$10,000.
The eighth annual awards program for high-school seniors is designed to promote and encourage entrepreneurship endeavors among teenagers in America.
Award recipients attend the university, college, community college or career institute of their choice with $1,000 to $10,000 in tuition assistance from the foundation. One student will be named the 2010 Young Entrepreneur of the Year and will be awarded a total scholarship award of $10,000.
Students can visit www.NFIB.com/YEA to apply for a scholarship online. The deadline for applying for an award is Dec. 31.
Dermody honors historic businesses
Frain Mortuary was recently honored with the Half-Century Business Awards for 83 years in business in the Statehouse Rotunda in Indianapolis by Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte.
The award is given to businesses between 50 and 99 years old. Also receiving the honor was Good Oil Company Inc. for 68 years.
Several other businesses located within House District 20 received the Century Award. These included Gilsinger Implement Company Inc. for 110 years and Fenker & Company Inc. for 106 Years.
Businesses are nominated by community individuals or organizations unaffiliated with the company and must demonstrate a history of community involvement by, for example, sponsoring sports teams.

Vegetable meeting provides insight
WEST LAFAYETTE — Commercial vegetable producers can learn about the latest technology and pest management issues at the 2009 Purdue Vegetable Growers Meeting on Nov. 25 at the Fulton County Fairgrounds, 1009 W. Third St., Rochester.
The meeting will have five educational sessions. Speakers include:
• Dan Egel, Purdue Extension plant pathologist, reviewing the 2009 growing season and the impact of late blight on the tomato crop.
• Rick Foster, Purdue Extension vegetable and fruit crops entomologist, talking about western bean cutworm and the impact of high tunnels.
• Liz Maynard, Purdue Extension regional vegetable specialist, discussing new nutrient meters that can detect nitrogen rates on tomato plants.
• Fred Whitford, Purdue pesticide program coordinator, speaking about the importance of properly tying loads down when transporting produce.
• Mark Kepler, Purdue Extension educator in Fulton County, discussing private pesticide applicator credits available to participants for $10. Participants interested in credits should bring their current license with them.
Registration is due Thursday and is $20 per person. The fee includes materials and handouts.
