Award winner deserves thanks

Congratulations to Mike McCord on his selection as the seventh recipient of the Cass County Community Foundation’s Richard Cassidy Jr. “Thanks for Giving” Volunteer Award.

Deanna Crispen, the foundation’s executive director, said her organization’s board had been unanimous in its decision to honor McCord, the owner of McCord’s Do It Best Lumber and Hardware.

He is in his first term as a member of the Logansport Community School Board, and he has also been involved with the Logansport-Cass County Chamber of Commerce, All Saints Catholic Church and with programs aimed at at-risk youth. He is also a long-time volunteer for the community foundation’s annual Valentine’s Day serenades.

The award is named for the late Richard W. Cassidy Jr., a driving force in the formation of the Cass County Community Foundation and its original umbrella organization, the Northern Indiana Community Foundation. When Cassidy died in 2003, he was president of Security Federal Savings Bank. He had been a United Way of Cass County board member, a member of the Logansport Planning Commission and Logansport Cass County Public Library board and led the 1973 fund-raising effort that resulted in the building of the Cass County Family YMCA.

McCord was humble in accepting the recognition.

“This is hard for me because I look around at all the people who have volunteered with me,” he said. “I don’t deserve this, but at the same time, I appreciate it. ... I’ve always assumed there were a lot more people who’ve done more than me. It’s a tremendous honor.”

McCord is a genuinely nice guy who always seems to have the community’s best interest at heart.

Let us all join in offering him a special thank you for all he does to improve the lives of people living in Logansport and Cass County.

  • Testing lawmakers a good idea

A measure requiring drug testing for welfare recipients would also require drug testing for legislators. If lawmakers are going to impose such a requirement on welfare recipients, they should be willing to stand up to the same measure.
