Class: Medical Terminology and Medical Law and Ethics
Sarah Lowry is a student at Logansport High School. She is taking classes at Century Career Center in medical terminology and medical law and ethics by Jeanie Goad. She plans to attend a four-year college/university and possibly go on to medical school.
What she likes most about her classes at CCC is “being in a class that is geared toward one area of study. They really help you get prepared for your future,” said Lowry.
She believes her classes are preparing her for her future career because “they give me more than just the general idea of what I’m getting myself into. They go into more depth, and give me an idea of what I should consider majoring in,” she continued.
Awards Sarah has earned include Recognition Award for participation in the Inside Out Project, Freshman 2008; Best Freshman Art Award, 2008; Top 20 in Class 2008, 2009; letter awards for athletics, 2008, 2009; Magpie Art Awards first, second and third place, 2009; NCC Champs of basketball and softball, 2009; NCC All Sports champs 2008; Junior Miss Champs, 2009; 4.0+ student, 2008, 2009; and certified in CPR, first aid and lifeguarding.
Sarah is involved in cross country, basketball and softball. She also plays in a softball summer league and travel team. The clubs and activities she belongs to are SADD Club, Spanish Club, Art Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Pep Club, Key Club, Book Club, Latin Club, the Math Academic Team, and Sub Debs.
In her spare time, she enjoys photography and scrapbooking, and she loves to cook.
When asked about her favorite teacher, she replied, “I really don’t have a favorite teacher, but of all the teachers I’ve had, these are the ones that have stood out the most: Mrs. Kiesling, Mr. Gwin, Ms. Fissel, Mrs. Goad, Mr. Hole, Mr. Cottrell, Mrs. Sharp, Mrs. Rothgeb and Mrs. Harmon. All of these teachers have taught me many valuable things.”
The person she looks up to the most is her brother, Mark Lowry. “He inspires me because he has already attended college and has a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health. He played baseball collegiately. I would enjoy playing a sport at the college level as he did. He is just an all around great person to be close to,” she said.
One of her proudest moments was receiving her letter jacket her sophomore year by playing varsity sports her freshman and sophomore years.
Advice she would give to other students about career planning and preparation is “to plan for your career; you should really be in touch with your parents, counselor and teachers. Taking classes in the Century Career Center has really helped and given me an idea on what I want to go to college for.”
Jeanie Goad, RN, is the instructor in the School of Medical and Allied Health at Century Career Center.
She describes Sarah’s greatest strengths as being her desire to learn and her high level of self motivation. “She is extremely responsible, reliable and trustworthy, always respectful and considerate to those around her,” said Goad.
“Sarah always displays a positive attitude. She consistently gets all assignments/projects completed accurately and timely. She is very bright and grasps new concepts quickly, exhibits punctuality and has a great attendance record,” added Goad.
Sarah’s greatest accomplishment is her consistently high grade point average along with participating in many time demanding activities and clubs.
Some major tasks Sarah has learned through her classes include developing language and vocabulary skills necessary for effective use in the medical profession. “She has also began to learn an overview of law and ethics for the allied health professions that function in a variety of settings,” said Goad.
A goal for Sarah is for her to continue to thrive in the medical field by gaining a deeper understanding of medical knowledge to enhance her post-secondary experience.
“It is a joy and privilege to have Sarah in class,” said Goad.
