Freedom Hunt succeeds again

Every year, the last full weekend of September plays host to the Freedom Hunt deer hunt. Freedom Hunt is organization whose primary focus is to expose special needs children to the outdoors through the guidance of experienced outdoorsmen and women. This is primarily done by engaging the participants in a deer hunt during the designated youth deer season.

This year produced another successful event as 16 young men and women appeared in camp with smiles like those we are accustomed to seeing on any given Christmas morning. The weekend was filled with fellowship, laughter and most importantly, exposure to Mother Nature, throughout several beautiful properties located on or near the banks of the Eel River east of Logansport. At the close of the weekend, eight of the 16 participants harvested deer, but most importantly, many new relationships were developed. From a personal standpoint, it was a great privilege to be entrusted with our young hunters and to be able to help them create and share memories that will last for a lifetime. The irony of this event is that these young people teach me as much about myself as I learn about them.

In any event, our hunt is the culmination of a full year’s planning and the gratuity of some exceptional human beings. While I am sure to miss a few, I would like to extend our thanks to the Jim Rogers family and the other 15 or so landowners who offer up the use of their land every year. In addition, I would like to thank Rural King, both Young’s Culligan and Kokomo Culligan, Waddell’s IGA (Russiaville), Simpson’s and Holland’s Deer Processing, Happy Burger, Izaak Walton League (Kokomo and Logansport), Army National Guard, our local conservation officers and any of those that I might have missed. Your generosity is much appreciated.
