Last year, my co-workers at the Logansport Lucas Home Furnishings store were discussing what we could do to give back to the community. As some of you may know, I told them about the homeless man sleeping on the street with a light jacket, old dress shoes, no shoe laces and no socks.
This picture was in a Life magazine featuring how the White House would be decorated for Christmas. That was, of course, the reason I picked up the magazine in the first place. Strange how things happen. Farther on back in the magazine was a picture of this man.
To this day, after all these years, I can see this in my mind. It still makes an impact on me and what I try to do for people.
Last year, we put up a sock tree in the Logansport store, and on the day before Christmas Eve, we delivered 600 pairs of socks to the Emmaus Mission. The owners and the sales staff at the Kokomo stores wanted to join us this year, so here we are making the second annual sock tree.
In December, Lucas Home Furnishings will be donating two pairs of socks for every one pinned on our trees. They can be winter, summer, work or dress socks for adults and children.
Linda Hoffman with Emmaus Mission told me the other day that they were almost out of socks from the ones we gave last year, so we are hoping for another blessed year.
