I’m no different than most people. I hold life dear and cherish it. I’ve been listening to the comments on the definitions of what rape is by several Republicans. I see where Mike Pence cosponsored and voted for a bill that would redefine rape. The bill “would redefine rape so that women on Medicaid could only have abortion services covered if the rape was “forcible.” (My opinion: Rape is rape. Period!) It would also deny abortion coverage to victims of incest who are 18 years of age or older (OpenCongress, March 11, 2011). In 2008, he co-sponsored an invasive ultrasound bill. (He even voted against the Lilly Ledbetter law to provide equal pay for equal work.) He also recently came out in opposition to requiring health insurance coverage for birth control.
Then, Republican Todd Akin told KTVI-TV that pregnancy from rape is “really rare” and implied that the female reproductive system is able to block conception from an unwanted pregnancy (according to the Washington Post). “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” he said.
Now, there is Republican Richard Mourdock who said, in the debate, that if a woman gets pregnant from rape that “it is something that God intended to happen.” I’m a reasonable person who tries to be fair, but I have reached my limit with Republicans. Women, men, girls and boys, you cannot be deceived into believing that these ideas are not dangerous. They are widespread in the Republican Party and pose a real danger to all women and girls.
I understand the concern about abortion. But this radical thinking is way over the edge. Please, think about it before you vote. I worry for my daughters and granddaughters. I worry for your daughters and granddaughters.
