PUBLIC FORUM: Why do Koch brothers care about Indiana anyway?

— We have a legally elected House and Senate, who in my humble opinion are doing their job with the best interests of their constituents, the citizens of Indiana, in mind.

We have a governor who ran telling everyone that he was going to cut taxes 10 percent. This governor gave the impression all through the campaign that, if elected, things were going to be his way. Kind of reminds me of a spoiled child. And we have a duly elected Congress who disagrees with him.

Enter “Americans for Prosperity,” an outside interest, backed by the Koch brothers, who say they are lobbying for the governor. Looking at the tax cut, who do you think will benefit the most? If you think it will be blue-collar families, then ask yourself why the Koch brothers would be behind it. If you really believe that “Americans for Progress” wants to do anything but help the people who don’t need help, you’re living on Fantasy Island.

Reports show that the governor’s proposed tax cut would give the “average” taxpayer an extra $228 for a family of four. This works out to $4.38 a week. If we were talking about a tax increase, I would be against it. The state has enough of a surplus in the coffers. We are talking about a decrease or the option of spending the money to educate the children in that family of four, or repair roads. We are talking about replacing part of what has previously been stripped from the education budget. The lower a person’s income, the lower the amount of the cut would mean to them. It will NOT hurt truly low-income folks. The Koch brothers are the sixth richest Billionaires, with a capital B, in the world. They did NOT get where they are by watching out for the working poor and I seriously doubt if that’s where they are coming from right now with their support of the Indiana tax cut, which will have no effect on them personally.

Ask yourself which you prefer, $4.38 a week, or spending for schools and better highways. To me, it’s a no brainer.

My support goes with our own Indiana House and Senate, not with outside interest. My support goes to our elected officials who prefer to put money into education and highways. Let Congress know how you feel. Support them. They are trying to support you.
