PUBLIC FORUM: Democracy questioned

I quote from the AP inaugural address in the Pharos-Tribune, on a day of renewal for democracy everyone seemed to have an opinion. “I’m just thankful we’ve got another four years of democracy that everyone can grow in,” said Wilbur Cole, 52, a postman from suburban Memphis, Tenn.

I researched democracy in the New World Dictionary of the American Language Second College Edition. This is the definition.

1.)  Government in which the people hold the ruling power either directly or through elected representatives; rule by the ruled.

2.) A country, state, etc., with such government

3.) Majority rule

4.) The principle of equality of rights, opportunity and treatment, or the practice of the principle

5.) The common people especially as the wielders of political power

6.) [D-] (Now Rare) the principle of the Democratic Party.

With President Obama threatening executive orders on many issues, I find it a long way from democracy.
