My name is Steve Miller, and I am the power and light superintendent at Frankfort Municipal Utilities (FMU), a member of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA). At one time, we were one of only a handful of utilities in Indiana with a local generation facility. Our community made the difficult decision during the 1970s to close our power plant in order to financially save our utility and better serve our customers. While the decision was not an easy one, we made the best decision we could for our community and electric customers.
Through our membership in IMPA, FMU and our customers have maintained a sense of reliability and security in our power supply. IMPA serves 59 communities in Indiana, which means FMU is part of a larger group of utilities working together to secure power resources. By working together, we are able to do more than we would be able to individually. IMPA currently has some the lowest wholesale electric rates in the state, which greatly contributes to Frankfort’s low electric rates as well. IMPA’s power supply portfolio consists of coal, natural gas, nuclear, and wind generation, as well as energy efficiency initiatives designed to lower the demand for electricity in its municipal communities. By relying on a variety of resources, rather than one single facility, IMPA mitigates the fluctuation of costs that can greatly affect power rates. IMPA’s diverse portfolio, coupled with the agency’s participation in proven, reliable technologies, helps to ensure we and the other IMPA members maintain stable rates for our customers now and well into the future. Additionally, IMPA’s ownership in the Joint Transmission System along with its membership in the Midwest ISO and PJM, the regional transmission operators, provides reliable, equitable transmission access.
Today, FMU is a reliable utility provider with some of the lowest retail rates in the state of Indiana.
While closing our plant was not an easy decision, we have come through on the other side a stronger and stable utility. Through our membership in IMPA, we have been able to provide electricity to our customers reliably and economically. I wish Logansport Municipal Utilities good luck in their pursuit of a long-term power supply so that their customers, too, can enjoy economic power and reliable service.
