ROYAL CENTER — Three people were killed and one was seriously injured in a crash in Royal Center before dawn Saturday.
Investigators believe alcohol and speed might have been a factor in the wreck, according to a news release issued by the Cass County Sheriff’s Department. The release said heavy fog in the area might have also played a role in the crash.
Killed in the crash were 19-year-old Erron Stoddard of Winamac, 19-year-old Brandon Lee Miller of Winamac and 19-year-old Bruce Leearmel Wireman of Culver. All three suffered blunt force trauma and massive internal injuries, and all tree were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release.
The three were passengers in a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Joshua P. Barcus of Winamac, who was listed critical condition Saturday at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Barcus was taken to Logansport Memorial Hospital and later transferred to the Fort Wayne hospital by ambulance. The release said he couldn’t be flown to Fort Wayne because the helicopter was grounded by fog.
Sheriff’s deputies were called just after 4 a.m. Saturday to Royal Center where a sport utility vehicle had crashed into the rear of a parked semitrailer.
Witnesses reported that the 2003 Ford Explorer was headed south on U.S. 35 entering Royal Center when the crash occurred.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department.
