Suspect held in Winamac burglary

Police track down suspect through hat purchase

LOGANSPORT — An arrest has been in the burglary of the Ace Hardware store in Winamac.

Authorities served a warrant on 36-year-old Jeffery Adams at his Bass Lake residence on Friday. He was charged with felony burglary and theft.

During the night of May 12, a white male broke into the Ace Hardware store at 854 N. Plymouth Road in Winamac. After breaking into the store, the culprit smashed a glass display case in the Radio Shack portion of the store.

Police reported that the burglar made off with a large amount of merchandise.

The culprit’s image was captured by video surveillance. Although the culprit concealed his face with a yellow cloth, a distinctive Indiana University hat and maroon shirt can easily be seen in the video.

Winamac police officers determined that Good Oil in Winamac had hats matching the one identified in the burglary. Surveillance from the gas station showed a man wearing the same clothing buying a hat minutes before the break-in.

Winamac Police Chief Mike Buchanan showed pictures from the Good Oil surveillance to Starke County detectives, one of whom identified the man as Adams.

During the search of Adams’ residence on Friday, police reportedly seized clothing items matching the clothing in the surveillance video.

None of the stolen merchandise has been found.

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department and prosecutor’s office assisted with the investigation and serving the warrant.

As of Monday, Adams remained in the Pulaski County Jail under a bond of $60,000 surety or 10 percent cash.
