Cass County conservation officer Brenda Louthain is pleased to have finally chosen a dog to fill the vacancy left by her long-time tracking K-9 G.W., but along the way she acquired a yellow lab she needs to find a home for.
“She would take a lot of work, a lot of patience,” Louthain said. “You wouldn’t be able to yell at her because loud voices scare her.”
The dog’s name is Molly. She is 15 months old, spayed and current on all her vaccinations. She needs a quiet home where she would be an inside dog with an owner who understands mistreated dogs. Louthain says Molly gets nervous around people she does not know and must be on a leash when outside or she might bolt.
“Molly’s a very sweet dog,” Louthain said. “I would really like to find a good home for her.”
In the past couple of weeks, Louthain, Molly and her new black lab, Ike, have been attending K-9 training school at Patoka Reservoir in southern Indiana. Louthain decided on the first day that Molly was not suited for the rigors of tracking.
Ike is a 10-month-old black lab bred by a water fowl hunter from North Judson. He was donated to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Louthain says he is doing well and seems to have a knack for tracking. There are challenges, though.
“Well, everything is a game for him, so it takes awhile for the light bulb to go off on what we’re actually wanting him to do,” Louthain said.
Trainers are making the tracks more and more difficult each day. Instead of just straight lines, they have added turns to mimic the actions of criminals running from police or people lost in the woods.
Louthain says Ike should earn his DNR badge at graduation in April.
Ike is replacing G.W., who Louthain retired last summer after a 10-year career.
Louthain decided to retire G.W., also known as “Game Warden,” after injuries he sustained while searching for a murder weapon in Kokomo. He was hit by a truck after finding the slide to a semi-automatic weapon and suffered a break in his hip joint, which led to severe arthritis.
Now, G.W. spends his time relaxing on Louthain’s rural Cass County property.

Have a home?
Anyone interested in providing a good home to Molly should contact the Department of Natural Resources’ North Region Headquarters in Peru at 765-473-9722. Molly is 15 months old, spayed and current on all her vaccinations. She needs a quiet home where she could be an inside dog.
