The Logansport school board voted Monday to approve approximately $400,000 in general fund budget cuts.
The cuts are the first wave of suggestions made by school corporation treasurer Greg Korreckt and a finance board comprised of two board members, school administrators and teachers.
“We formed a committee to look at the needs of the corporation and the financial situation we are in now,” superintendent Julie Lauck said. “They did a great job of looking at areas where we could tighten the belt on spending.”
By not filling vacant positions, reducing supplies funds by 20 percent and reducing the scope of summer school programs offered, the corporation is hoping to offset a $1.1 million loss in state funding for 2010.
Money saved by positions absorbed via attrition amount to about $164,000. The 20 percent cut in supplies like periodicals, postage, instructional supplies and contracted printing will equal $150,000.
Logansport school corporation’s general fund revenue for 2009 was about $26.1 million and will be cut to $25 million in 2010. The vast majority of those funds, accounting for 91 percent, are salary and benefit-related.
Lauck said the corporation has vowed to keep cuts as far away from the classroom as long as possible.
Korreckt explained the corporation began receiving $83,000 less each month from the state starting last month. Until the cuts approved Monday go into effect, the corporation can rely on a 7 percent cash reserve left over from 2009.
He explained the cuts proposed by the committee represented only initial budget trimming.
“This was the first wave, or the low-hanging fruit if you will,” he said. “The committee was aware of keeping the students in mind and finding solutions that would have a low impact on the classroom and students.”
The treasurer said the committee would be returning to the board with further recommendations to reduce the budget.
