LOGANSPORT —
Cass County commissioners voted this week to take away their own health insurance.
“It’s going to be a cost savings,” said Dave Arnold, president of the board of commissioners, “and we need all the cost savings we can find.”
Commissioners unanimously approved the resolution Tuesday, but the move will mean no immediate change. Arnold noted that Jim Sailors was the only one of the three commissioners on the county insurance policy.
“He’ll be able to keep that insurance,” Arnold said, “but if he drops it, he won’t be able to get it back.”
Arnold and Commissioner Gene Powlen are not enrolled in the county’s insurance plan.
The resolution approved Tuesday says any commissioner who does not now have insurance through the county will not be able to obtain it. It also says anyone elected to the board in the future will not have the option of obtaining insurance through the county.
“It’s pretty hard just to cut people,” Arnold said, “but we’re having to make some hard choices.”
He noted that the county had been forced to cut the line item for insurance next year from $2.2 million to $1.65 million.
“And I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet,” Arnold said. “I think we’ll see more cuts next year.”
