The Logansport Municipal Utilities repower and expansion study team will host a public information session to discuss the possible construction of a power plant fired by refuse-derived fuel.
LMU superintendent Paul Hartman said a press release was created in anticipation of positive results from the Logansport Utility Service Board, which will meet at 7:30 tonight to consider the project.
The team, made of experts in the energy field who have gathered information to see if project is a possibility, will be revealed at tonight’s meeting, Hartman said.
As one method to save and increase local jobs, the team is expected to recommend Logansport Municipal Utilities construct a new refuse-derived-fuel power plant. The plan, the news release said, is to achieve total system capacity of 300 megawatts as the best approach to maintain local independence for electricity generation and distribution at a cost of 4.5 to 5.5 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Wednesday’s information session will provide members of the public the opportunity to review information with the team and ask questions.
“The more educated the public is about what we’re trying to do, the better things will be,” Hartman said.
Proposals to upgrade and expand LMU’s power generation facilities are expected in January, according to the news release. If implemented, the first phase of repowering the existing plant would be completed no later than 2016. Construction of the new power plant would likely be completed in 2016-2017.
The city and LMU would evaluate proposals based on the responders’ experience with the proposed technology, the quality of their technical proposal and an assessment of their ability to deliver electricity at the desired cost level.
Future phases of the project, the news release said, will involve public hearings and permit approvals from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
