Kings march to title

Making its 30th straight finals appearance, Lewis Cass earns seventh title

INDIANAPOLIS — For Lewis Cass Marching Kings’ band director Mike Clark, it didn’t matter if his marching band won or lost Saturday at the state finals.

But a win would be icing on the cake.

“When our kids perform, they put on a great performance,” Clark said. “We were all pleased with their performance, and from my point of view, I was glad they did the best they could — win, lose or draw.”

In their 30th straight appearance, the Marching Kings secured another state title. They bested nine other schools in class D at the Indiana State Music Association Marching Band Finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

As the announcer called the name of each school from 10th to first place, Clark could only think one thing, he said later.

“I was happy to still be out there and not to have had our name called,” he said.

He suspected his students would at least finish in the top four.

“I knew that out of the top four, there were some great bands,” Clark said.

The difference between Lewis Cass and the other bands? Clark believes it was the music.

“Our kids played exceptionally well,” he said. “Music was the biggest difference after looking at the score sheets.”

This isn’t the Marching Kings’ first time on top.

The band captured class D titles in 2006, 2007 and 2009. They also won class C titles in 1988, 1995 and 2003.

“I think it’s special any time, but with the 30th consecutive year, it makes it a little more special,” Clark said about this year’s win.

This year’s band featured 100 members who performed “All Gave Some, Some Gave All,” which honors those in the military. The music was comprised of “Each Time You Tell Their Story” by Samuel Hazo, “Perthshire Majesty” by Samuel Hazo, and “Raging Machines” by Brian Balmages.

Clark said he hoped the show taught the band members a lesson.

“We tried to teach them there are people who do give their lives, so we can do the things we do,” he said.
