Incumbent judge seeks second term in Cass County circuit court

Democrat served as Logan city attorney before election in 2006.

— Cass County’s circuit court judge said he will seek a second term in office.

Democrat Leo Burns, 59, will run again. He was elected to the position in November 2006.

“If re-elected, I promise to continue to faithfully serve the citizens of Cass County,” Burns said in a press release.

As Cass Circuit Court judge, Burns handles all of the county’s juvenile cases.

Since election, he was “instrumental” in organizing two town hall meetings about youth in the community, he said. One focused on juvenile crime, and the other dealt with parenting in the technological age.

Burns said he also helped start the Six-to-Six program, which offers an alternative way for middle school students to serve suspensions. Part of the program includes an appearance before a judge.

Before he was elected in 2006, Burns was Logansport city attorney and was a partner in Leeman and Burns law office. He also served as deputy prosecuting attorney from 1986 to 2000.

He is a member of the Criminal Benchbook Committee of Judicial Conference of Indiana and serves on the board of directors of Two Rivers Academy, A.I.M Inc. and the Department of Child Services Regional Services Council.

Burns is a graduate of Indiana Judicial College. He is a 1974 graduate of Purdue University and 1986 graduate of Valparaiso School of Law.

His wife, Lucy is a second-grade teacher at Thompson Elementary School in Walton.

As of late last week, no one else had filed for the seat. Filing for the May 8 primary ends at noon Friday.

The Cass Superior Court II judge’s seat will also be on the ballot. Other Cass County positions up for election are clerk, auditor, treasurer, coroner, surveyor, two commissioner seats and three at-large seats on the county council.

The general election is Nov. 6.
