Additional charges filed in rape case

Suspect pleads not guilty, set for June trial

As promised, the Cass County prosecutor’s office filed additional charges against a Logansport man accused of rape.

After an initial hearing in Cass Superior Court II Thursday morning, 29-year-old Jonathon Allen Popejoy is facing charges of criminal confinement, sexual battery, strangulation and domestic battery, as well as rape, said Prosecutor Kevin Enyeart.

Police arrested Popejoy Saturday morning after a 31-year-old Logansport woman arrived at the Cass County Sheriff’s Department saying she had been strangled and raped.

Popejoy has pleaded not guilty. He informed the court he would be hiring private counsel.

Enyeart said Popejoy is accused of having sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent. The alleged rape occurred at a rural Logansport residence.

On Monday, Cass Superior Court II Judge Rick Maughmer determined investigators had enough evidence to charge Popejoy.

Popejoy paid a $25,000 surety bond to free himself from the Cass County Jail after Monday’s hearing.

Popejoy’s next court appearance is a pre-trial conference set for April 15. A jury trial is scheduled for June 2.

If convicted of all charges, Popejoy faces more than 30 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.
