Juveniles ejected from truck bed

Police say kids only ‘scraped up’ after collision.

LOGANSPORT — Several juveniles received minor injuries after being ejected from the bed of a truck involved in an accident in Cass County Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Mike Day of the Cass County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident at about 3:15 p.m.

A truck driven by Austin Price of Monticello was northbound on 500 West, which Day noted was a gravel road, and was approaching the intersection of 225 South.

“The dirt was so bad that the vehicle couldn’t see the stop sign there,” Day said.

Price’s vehicle went through the intersection without stopping and was hit by a vehicle driven westbound on 225 South by Randy Higgins of Burnettsville.

“Once that happened, the vehicle that disregarded the stop sign started spinning. It went across the intersection and hit a backhoe that was parked along the road,” Day said.

The vehicle then reportedly went through a fence and came to rest in a pasture.

Day said that upon impact, several juveniles who were sitting in the bed of the truck were thrown out of the vehicle onto the gravel road.

“They had road rash and were scraped up,” he said.

One was taken to Logansport Memorial Hospital for treatment. Day said the injuries were minor.

Day said he wasn’t sure whether or not Price would be cited for allowing the juveniles to ride in the truck’s bed without proper safety restraints.
