Fourth of July celebration moving to Riverside

Fireworks will be set off from LMU property on north side of Eel

Plan to celebrate the Fourth of July someplace different this year.

After a number of years at Fairview Park the Logansport Parks Board approved moving the city’s Independence Day celebration to Riverside Park at Wednesday’s meeting .

Parks director Jan Fawley said the move will provide event goers with activities she feels aren’t available at other locations. Another reason for the change comes from budget cuts and Parks Department staffing issues.

In the past, the Jaycees have helped with the city’s July 4 celebrations, but that organization shut down due to lack of interest among it target age group.

“We’re short staffed,” Fawley said, “and there’s a host of activities that people can do when they go to Riverside Park.”

Fawley has received approval from everyone involved in the proposed event at Riverside, including Logansport Municipal Utilities. Plans for the event call for fireworks to be set off from its property on the north side of the Eel River.

Fawley is confident Riverside will accommodate the July 4 celebration easily. She said the location offers flexibility regarding entertainment options and places for vendors to set up.

“We feel like we can do lots of good things there,” Fawley said.

During the meeting, board member Chico Rodriguez said he was willing to try holding the event at Riverside one year as an experiment.

If the board does not like the results at Riverside, Fawley pointed out the event can return to Fairview Park.

Fawley said plans are to have a shuttle to take people to Riverside for the celebration.

“But I think mostly we want people to walk,” Fawley said. “There are a lot of people in that area that can walk there and take a lawn chair and enjoy themselves that way.”
