What started out as a simple trip to the store turned into a small excursion for Maverick and Debbie Walters Saturday.
The Walters were among hundreds of people who braved the heat and sun to attend Taste of Cass County at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza. The event is the main fundraiser for Logan’s Landing.
“We were driving around in the old hot rod and heard about it on the radio,” Maverick Walters said as he enjoyed a Spanish dog from B&K West.
The couple didn’t know it was going on but decided to check it out. When they arrived, they were impressed by the food available from 12 different vendors spread along Melbourne Avenue..
“There is quite a bit to pick from. We had to walk around first to see what we wanted,” he said.
Ninety minutes into the Taste of Cass County, the sales of BBQ bison sliders from Walnut Valley Bison at the Old Mill General Store booth were going well.
“We’re close to halfway through what we brought,” Scott Jellison said.
Visitors to the tent were also learning more about the store itself, according to Brian Shafer.
“We’ve been able to share information on the Old Mill General Store. A lot of people don’t know it’s open,” he said. “They can get the bison meat there and other meat produced by people in the county.
“People are curious about bison meat. They’ve heard of it and heard that it’s good for you for the health benefits so they coming to get a taste.”
“We’re awfully glad people are coming out despite the heat,” said Becki Harris, executive director of Logan’s Landing. “There’s been a very steady crowd.”
She expected the crowd would continue to grow as it neared time for the fireworks.
“Last year a lot of people timed it to be here for the fireworks. Plus, we’re stamping people so they can leave and return later as well,” Harris said.
