More students rally for principal

Students gather at Caston board meeting to seek reversal

FULTON — More students turned out Tuesday to address the school board concerning its 3-2 vote not to renew Caston Junior-Senior High School Principal Matt Rickett’s contract for the 2007 school year

High school senior Rob Miller had presented a petition at the Nov. 7 board meeting asking that the board keep Rickett in his position. Then, he had the signatures of 121 of the high school’s 246 students. On Tuesday, he had 194 signatures, 79 percent of the student body.

He also had 57 signatures from members of the community.

In another letter to the board, Miller wrote: “I believe you want what’s best for students. Well, if the students want Mr. Rickett, I believe it is the best thing to do.”

Board members offered no comment on the request. The matter was not on the agenda, and the board took no action on the request.

Rickett did not attend the meeting.

Miller asked the board if it could either “re-vote or let students vote.” He also said he was not giving up on the issue.

“No matter if they keep rejecting it or not — I’m not going to stop,” he said, adding that he would continue to attend board meetings and encourage fellow students to do the same.

The next board meeting will be at 8 p.m. Dec. 5.

In other matters:

• Caston Elementary received a $2,100 Cass County Reading Railroad grant titled, “Families That Read Together Succeed.”

• A consideration for the employment of an architect to study and prepare drawings with cost estimates to divide the current kindergarten room into three classrooms was approved.

• January school board meetings were changed to Jan. 9 and 23.

• The board approved a request for Lucinda Douglass, Bob Huffman and Matt Rickett to attend a professional training activity on the evaluation process at the Honeywell Center in Wabash Jan. 17.
