Tracking of criminals available to victims

Indianapolis — This week is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and it marks the 1-year anniversary of Indiana’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system, or SAVIN.

Originally launched in April 2007, the system is available 24/7 to Indiana residents to call a toll-free number or log onto the Web to receive real-time information to track the custody status of offenders in Department of Correction and county jail facilities.

Users can also register to be notified by phone or e-mail when an offender is released, transferred or escapes from custody. The service is free to the public.

The public can register for the system by calling (866) 959-8463 or by logging onto www.vinelink.com

Indiana SAVIN is currently available in 31 Indiana counties and in the department’s 21 adult correctional facilities. The program will be implemented over a two-year period with the remaining 61 counties joining the system by the end of 2008.
