PERU — On Tuesday, Macanaquah High School and Macanaquah Middle School along with North Miami High School, were searched for illegal drugs.
The search was conducted using police narcotic dogs from the Indiana State Police, Wabash County Sheriff’s Department and Peru Police Department. No drugs were found at any of the schools.
The officers were invited to conduct the searches by the school corporations. The searches are a partnership between law enforcement and school corporations in a concerted effort to keep schools safe and drug free. An unannounced exterior search of student lockers and vehicles parked in the school’s lots was conducted utilizing police dogs that are trained in the detection of various illegal narcotics.
“Illegal drugs are a problem in society as a whole,” stated Master Trooper Paul Daugherty, Indiana State Police canine handler, in a news release. “Law enforcement takes this unnecessary threat to our young people very seriously. We will assist the school corporations’ efforts to create a safe learning environment by keeping illegal drugs out of the schools.”
During Tuesday’s search, the Indiana State Police utilized handlers and police dogs from the state police posts in Bremen, Fort Wayne and Peru.
