Reading Railroad has been working for two and a half years throughout the Cass County community. The “little engine” has led the way in coordinating efforts of the libraries, the schools and businesses. We have joined together to help kindergarten, first-grade children and their parents to recognize the important role they play in helping their children achieve early success in learning.
On Oct. 2, all Cass County elementary schools in grades K-2 will “Read for the Record.” Reading Railroad has supplied teachers with the book “Corduroy.” All area librarians will be visiting preschools and day cares to reach out to even more children in our county.
“Read for the Record” is part of a national effort called Jumpstart. Last year Jumpstart recorded 258,000 children for the record and this year we are pleased to include Cass County. Jumpstart is sponsoring this program to bring attention to the importance of reading. We want Cass County to take a leading role in this campaign. Corduroy is 40 years old, and the Logansport Public Library and Walton Library will continue this special celebration with a party. Logansport Public Library will host a birthday party from 3 to 6 p.m. Parents are welcome to stop with their children during this time for a movie and a treat. (The movie will be shown throughout the afternoon.) If a child has not heard the story, readers will be on hand to make sure they are included in the count. Walton Public Library will also have a birthday celebration for Walton children at 11:15 a.m.
Let’s all “get on board” and help Cass County lead the way in helping all children experience early success in learning.
