Unhappy father facing charges

PERU — A 41-year-old Peru man was arrested Friday after he reportedly threw his 17-year-old daughter out of the house.

The man was arrested on charges of neglect of a dependent and battery.

According to a Miami County Sheriff’s Department news release, officers found the victim in the house’s unheated garage, wearing a thin sweatshirt and sweatpants without shoes. Both her feet and sweatpants were covered in snow, according to the release.

The temperature was recorded at negative 13 degrees with a wind-chill factor of negative 33.

Salvation Army flooded again

Frozen pipes broke Friday evening for the second time in the past month at the Salvation Army’s new building at 620 Wilkinson St.

The extent of damage was unknown as of Friday evening. The flooding was discovered at 6:30 p.m. Friday by a group that uses the gym once a week for soccer practice.

Frozen pipes previously broke on Dec. 23, flooding the classrooms and hallway.

Items lost from the previous damage include boxes of donated copy paper and boxes of food.

The Salvation Army is seeking help from the community through monetary donations or assistance in helping to fix the damage. Anyone interested in helping can call (574) 722-1979.

Firefighters plan musical afternoon

DENVER — The Denver Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring an afternoon of gospel, bluegrass and old time country music from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Denver Community Building.

The Blue Grass Buddies and Friends will be performing.

Donations will be accepted, and proceeds will go toward helping the dedicated volunteer firefighters pay for much needed equipment.

Frontier Party set in Rochester

ROCHESTER — A Frontier Party is planned at 2 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Fulton County Museum.

The event is for a frontier boy who lived in Fulton County in 1833, working for the surveying team for the Michigan Road. Alan Garinger, Selma, wrote a book about it and titled it “Alone — The Journey of the Boy Sims.”

Refreshments will be foods of that period, such as hoe cakes (actually cornbread cookies with cranberries or chocolate chips), coffee soup and grape dumplings. Garinger will speak about “Three Kinds of History,” and will autograph his books.

Attorneys offer free legal advice

Several Cass County lawyers will provide free answers to legal questions from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday in Cass County Circuit Court.

The attorneys are participating in the Indiana State Bar Association’s “Talk to a Lawyer Today” program. This service is available for only two hours, and attorneys will respond to all calls made during that time.

“Last year’s program was a huge success,” said attorney Randy Head, who is coordinating the program. “We averaged one call every four minutes, and I expect to maintain or surpass that level this year. We have a lot of experienced attorneys who are donating their time to help anyone who wants it.”

Other volunteers include Jay Hirschauer, Bob Murray, Doug Cox, Mark Fryman, Brad Rozzi, George Stephenson and John Damm.

Free yoga offered by Delphi studio

DELPHI — Jan. 24 is a national celebration of Yoga day. In honor of this, free yoga classes will be offered at the home studio of Donna Mikesell, 9570N 650W in Delphi. She is a certified/insured yoga instructor.

Each class will be appropriate for all levels of experience. Natasha Walters, Logansport, also will be instructing some of the classes.

Times are 9 to 10 a.m.; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; 1 to 2 p.m.; and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Athletic boosters plan chicken bash

BUNKER HILL — The Maconaquah Athletic Boosters are sponsoring a Hap’s Chicken Bash before the Maconaquah vs. Logansport basketball game on Jan. 24 in the high school cafeteria.

Serving will begin at 3 p.m. that afternoon and will end at 6 p.m. Carryout will be available.

The dinner includes all-you-can-eat broasted chicken, baked potato, cole slaw, roll with butter, cookie and drink.

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 8 and under. Tickets will be available at the door.

Police chief offers report

At Wednesday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, Police Chief A.J. Rozzi delivered the department’s report for December.

During the month, 1,295 calls were made to the police department, of which 41 were new calls for the animal warden. There were 52 adult arrests made from those calls, and of those, four were for operating while intoxicated and one was drug related.

The traffic department issued eight green tag warnings and 22 parking tickets, and it ordered a total of nine vehicles towed. Officers issued 59 traffic citations and 15 warnings.

There were a total of 60 reported accidents, including a total of 52 property damage accidents and eight personal injury accidents. There were five accidents involving a vehicle that left the scene.

The fleet totaled 22,457 miles for the month.
