SUCCEED announces fifth annual student competition

From Staff Reports

The SUCCEED program has announced the kickoff of its 2009 programs for high school and elementary students.

“Inventors, Inventions and You” is a program for Cass County fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students interested in learning about innovation and entrepreneurship, and the high school program involves high school students developing a business plan.

The high school category offers a $1,000 first place scholarship, a $600 second place scholarship and a $300 third place scholarship to Ivy Tech Community College in Logansport.

The “Inventors, Inventions and You” winners will receive $100 savings bonds. And ithe contest also features a one-team competition with a $100 prize. All students involved in the competitions will receive certificates of recognition.

The inventors program encourages creativity by emphasizing planning and requiring the development of an invention and the presentation of the concept to the business community.

The program offers a classroom experience that provides opportunities for inquisitive students to apply critical and analytical thinking skills in a fun environment. Participants commit to eight two-hour classes with some required creative time outside the classroom. Deadline for registration is March 11.

The student inventions and ideas are submitted to a panel of judges made up of Cass County business and community leaders and each project will be displayed at a Youth Entrepreneurial Fair in May.

SUCCEED (Stimulating Unlimited Cass County Entrepreneurs and Economic Development) is a partnership that recognizes the value of entrepreneurship in Cass County.

Partner organizations include both city and county government in addition to Area Five Agency on Aging and Community Services, Logansport/Cass County Chamber of Commerce, Ivy Tech Community College of Logansport, Logansport-Cass County Economic Development Foundation, Logan’s Landing, North Central Indiana Small Business Development Center, Memorial Hospital, SCORE Chapter 615 and the Cass County Community Foundation.
