Logansport man held for having gun in car

Revolver found in his car at LHS after verbal fight

A Jan. 16 initial hearing was scheduled for a 42-year-old Logansport man accused of having a gun in his vehicle at Logansport High School Saturday.

Melvin Lee Nickels appeared in Cass Superior Court I Monday on charges of possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a firearm without a handgun permit. Nickels reportedly overheard a person use a racial slur in the stands at Friday night’s Logansport High School basketball game, according to a Logansport Police Department report. Nickels reportedly told the man he was going to shoot him, the report states.

Nickels and the other man spoke to each other Saturday and resolved their differences, the report states.

Assistant Police Chief Bryan Hillis said police still wanted to take precautionary measures to make sure Nickels did not have a gun on school property.

“Our agency was notified that he may have a gun on him or in his vehicle,” Hillis said Monday. He said police stopped Nickels before he was able to make it inside the building where Lewis Cass and Logansport were scheduled to play basketball.

Police found a .22-calibur revolver in the middle console of a vehicle registered to him. There were seven rounds in the nine-round cylinder.

Hillis said no children or students were targeted and there was no reason to believe that Nickels was there to use the gun on anyone else.

Nickels was being held in the Cass County Jail early Monday evening on $1,000 bond or $5,000 surety.
