In a trifecta of art, wine and charity, area businesses are teaming up to promote culture and youth outreach.
At tonight’s event, the Art Association will premiere its Black and White Art Show while hosting a fundraiser for an All Saints mission trip. The event will feature a silent auction, wine tasting and more than 70 pieces of art.
Rachel Ellington, director of the Art Association, said this show marks the first show of 2013 for the association.
“It’s a big nice start to the beginning of the year for us,” Ellington said.
This is the fourth year they’ve hosted the show, Ellington said.
All 72 entries were required to be in black or white and fall into the category of photography, two-dimensional pieces like drawings or painting or three-dimensional pieces like sculptures.
Some of the entries include a white oak statute on a marble base, a quilt and installation art, Ellington said.
This year’s show had a large number of entries from outside Logansport, Ellington said.
“We have a lot of out of town participation as well as local artists,” Ellington said.
At the end of the month-long exhibit, a panel of three judges, who Ellington describes as “an art lover,” someone with an “art background” and an out-of-town judge, will vote on awards for the pieces of art. The reception is Feb. 28.
The premier of the exhibit will also function as a fundraiser for the All Saints youth group mission trip to Virginia Beach, Va.
Twenty youth and six adults will be traveling to Virginia from June 16 to 22 to help out with needs like painting, construction and childcare, according to All Saints Formation Coordinator Teresa Keay.
“It’s just anything that any of the agencies in low income areas need,” Keay said.
Keay said this is their biggest fundraiser for the mission trip. They need to raise $415 for each person, she said.
She said they decided to incorporate the idea of wine tasting into the fundraiser in order to try something different.
“It’s something new,” Keay said. “People seem to be pretty excited about it.”
Stacey Angle, owner of the People’s Winery, said adults who buy the $10 ticket will be able to sample some of the six wines they’ll be bringing.
The youth group will also be raising funds with a silent auction featuring items related to Valentine’s Day. Keay said the items include baskets with wine, a sailing trip on Lake Michigan and pieces by local artists.
“We have had an extreme amount of support,” Keay said.
Ellington said she was approached about holding the fundraiser and wanted to bring in more of the community to the show.
“My goal in part of job is always to get more people in the communities involved,” Ellington said.
She added that she believed there would be more people coming in who hadn’t been there before.
