Steinberger wins adult spelling bee
Spelling 47 of the 50 competition words correctly, Steinberger Construction won the title of top spellers at Tuesday’s Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee.
The Steinberger team of Loryn Martin, Joe Zinsmeister and Matt Lewellen beat 12 other teams in the Literacy Volunteers of Cass County’s 18th annual fundraiser.
Martin said she wanted the company to get involved in the competition for the first time.
“It’s for a good cause,” she said. “And I thought we might be able to do well.”
Trailing by just a few words was Boiler Up Spellers, a group of Purdue University alumni of Cass County that included Leo Burns, Dee Ann Daniels and Karrie Kneble. Third place went to Andrea Blume, Bruce Murray and Alan Biggs representing Calvary Presbyterian.
Lewellen said literacy is a cause worth supporting.
“We are all involved in continuing education with our company, so that’s important to us,” he said.
Both Lewellen and Zinsmeister agreed Martin deserved the most valuable person title for the construction company’s team.
Midway through the competition, Steinberger led the competition with 24 with Boiler Up Spellers, Calvary Presbyterian and the Pharos-Tribune trailing at 23.
Beth Myers presided the event as Bee Master, with Terri Marcellino and Pennie Harris judging the event. All proceeds from the event benefited the literacy group’s tutoring programs and furthering education in Cass County.
Ruby Palmer-Hinkle of the Cass County Retired Teachers team was astonished at the number of organizations participating in the event. With some pre-competition anxiety, Palmer-Hinkle said in the end she did better than expected.
“I did better than I thought,” she said. “A lot of the words were really close. I will be more aware as I read and really look at how a word is spelled instead of just skimming over it.”
Her teammate, Kraig Dawalt, said the event allowed the community to come together for some fun.
“It shows that teachers, lawyers, doctors can all have fun,” Dawalt said. “It is competition, but it’s fun too.”
