Cause of Bates Street fire unknown

Firefighters spent Monday afternoon extinguishing a fire that caused extensive damage to the interior of a home behind Franklin Elementary School.

Just after 3 p.m., Logansport firefighters responded to 408 Bates St. to find smoke pouring from the two-story structure.

Assistant Chief Mike Woolington said no one was home when the fire was reported and the residents, who they believe work at Tyson Foods, had not been located as of Monday evening.

The fire was contained to the first floor living area but the home suffered heat and smoke damage throughout.

Fire Investigator Ted Franklin sifted through burnt rubble but had not determined a cause.

No injuries were reported. The fire remains under investigation.
