The Logansport Cass County Public Library awarded a contract Tuesday for its renovation project.
Commercial Contracting Inc. of Ft. Wayne was awarded the contract with a base bid of $804,000.
“It’s great to have the bid process completed,” library director David Ivey said. “It was a culmination of months of work and it is great to be moving forward.”
Commercial Contracting Inc. submitted one of four qualified bids for the project. The Fort Wayne company’s bid was also the lowest bid of the four.
The qualified bids received were all from Indiana companies. Leo Brown Construction Co. Inc. was the only contractor local to Logansport to place a bid. The firm's base bid was $952,500.
Gibson-Lewis LLC, a Mishawaka company, submitted a base bid of $973,500. Easterday Construction Co. Inc. of Culver offered a base bid of $889,500.
Ivey said Commercial Contracting Inc. has experience with municipal projects such as schools and town halls.
“They also have a niche with historic renovations, which we think could be a benefit with this building,” Ivey said.
The library director said he believes work could begin before Thanksgiving. The initial completion date listed for the project is June 1.
“June 1 is an aggressive completion but the bids were from some pretty sophisticated firms and the goal is to get it done quickly,” he said.
Interior renovation work includes new carpet upstairs, restrooms on the second floor and reconfiguration of shelves.
Design plans call for a parking lot, an outdoor seating area, a shelter and shade canopy, a concrete sign, a security camera and a new bike rack.
As for accommodating patrons, Ivey said the contractors know the library intends to stay open throughout construction.
“It will be difficult for a few months, especially with demolition work on the first floor,” Ivey said. “But we will be open the whole time and we will create a logistical plan in order to make that happen.”
