Area Five promotes healthy holidays

Health fair targeted low-income and Hispanic families.

Area Five is encouraging local families to have a healthy holiday season.

The organization hosted a Healthy for the Holidays seminar last week at Franklin Elementary.

“The purpose of this is really to make them more educated and aware of available services,” said Elaine Zeider, the manager of family services at Area Five.

Local organizations sponsored presentations at the event, including a session on nutrition and money-saving techniques with Purdue Extension; how to make a memorable holiday without the expense with Area Five Head Start; fire safety with the Logansport Fire Department; an H1N1 discussion with information on the flu with Logansport Memorial Hospital; and what you can do to ease the stresses of the holidays with Four County Counseling Center.

Bill Fawcett of Midwest Eye Care and language service provider El Puente also took part in the event. Ivy Tech provided free health screenings.

The program was coordinated by Indiana Minority Health Coalition/Covering Kids and Families of Indiana Coalition, a group headed up by Area Five.

Zeider said the health fair specifically targeted low-income and Hispanic families.

“This is our first year having this particular event,” she said. “And we really just want to educate this community on health issues and resources.”

The location of the event was also significant in attracting those target groups, Zeider said.

“We believe the low-income and Hispanic populations are under served, and having the event here at Franklin makes it more local for them and is right in the heart of their area,” she said.

Monica Morey, who organized the event, said those in attendance would have the opportunity to learn more about programs such as El Puente and Women, Infants and Children that could serve as an aid to the community.

Morey said every presentation of the evening was also given in Spanish by a translator.

“There is a lot of misinformation among the Hispanic population, and this will give them a better understanding,” she said. “People might know about these resources but here they have access to them all in one place and can ask information from them.”
