NEW NOW: Dangerous weather

The strong winds are causing power outages and creating dangerous road conditions.

Emergency responders and highway departments are keeping busy responding to crashes and clearing trees from roadways.

U.S. 24 at Cass County Road 500 East is closed in both directions due to multiple crashes at this location. That stretch of road is extremely slick.

Road conditions in north central Indiana are becoming slick due to the blowing snow caused by severe wind gust. Throughout the day, temperatures are expected to continue falling and could cause road conditions to deteriorate further.

Logansport Municipal Utilities has reported that sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph have knocked down utilities pole. As many as 100 homes were without power in the areas of Lake Cicott, Hoover and north of Logansport.

LMU Distribution Manager Bob Dunderman says all their crews are out working to restore power. As of 1 p.m., all but about 20 homes have electricity but they are preparing for the worst.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate winds will be sustained throughout the day and could reach 50 mph or more.

Sgt. Tony Slocum of the Indiana State Police warns motorists to be cautious and give road crews plenty of room to work. He is asking motorists to reduce their speed and be cognizant of the fact that road conditions are constantly changing.

Due to the expected extreme temperatures, state police ask that area residents check on elderly or disabled family members.
