Head-on crash

U.S. 35 crash seriously injures drivers

WALTON — Two people involved in a head-on collision Thursday on U.S. 35 were airlifted due to their injuries.

According to Deputy Gary Armstrong of the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, a 2002 black Ford Mustang driven by Mark Maroney, 32, Logansport, was southbound on U.S. 35 and attempted to pass two vehicles near 600S. Before making it back into the southbound lane, the Mustang struck a northbound 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck, driven by Terri L Simons, 48, Logansport, nearly head-on.

Armstrong reported that Simons attempted to swerve to the right out of the way. The passenger-side tires left the highway and she slid across the lane colliding with the Mustang.

Both drivers sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries. Maroney was airlifted from the scene by a LifeLine helicopter and taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Medics transported Simon to Logansport Memorial Hospital, where another LifeLine helicopter also transported her to Methodist.

While at the scene in sub-zero temperatures and hard blowing wind, Sheriff Sgt. Pat Zeider said the accident was not weather related. The driver of the Mustang was passing another vehicle at a high rate of speed when he failed to yield the right of way to the Ranger, Zeider said.

Armstrong said alcohol was not a factor.

Hundreds of papers from inside the pickup truck and other debris littered the highway, which was closed for two hours for the accident investigation and cleanup. The truck’s camper shell was torn off and broken into pieces. The truck came to rest facing the south on top of a guardrail. Most of its bed was severely damaged.

The Mustang suffered massive front-end damage.

Walton Police Department Brad Sommers was first on the scene. He said the Ranger’s driver was conscious at the time but bleeding badly.

The driver of the Mustang had gotten out of his vehicle and was being warmed up inside another vehicle when emergency responders arrived.

Galveston and Cass County medics, Walton, Galveston and Logansport fire departments and Galveston Police assisted at the scene.
