KOKOMO —
Becki Harris and Pam Leeman attended the Indiana Main Street Conference in Kokomo last week to see Logan’s Landing receive an award, but neither expected to win an award herself.
Logan’s Landing won the 2012 Indiana Main Street Design of Downtown Public Improvements Award for the Market Street Pocket Park featuring a sculpture called “The Dancers.”
Harris, executive director of Logan’s Landing, won staff member of the year, and Leeman, a Logan’s Landing board member, was one of three people in the state to be recognized as an outstanding board member.
“It’s very unexpected,” Harris said. “I do what I do because it needs to be done and I care strongly about it. I don’t do it to win awards, but it is nice to be recognized.”
Kathy Dingo, Logan’s Landing board member, said she wanted the awards for Harris and Leeman to be a surprise.
“It was a wonderful and exciting day,” she said. “It was overwhelming to see support from the community.”
Dingo said Logan’s Landing had a cheering section, including representatives from numerous city departments. Among them were Fire Chief Mark Strong, public works director Dan Williams, planning director Arin Shaver and Councilman Jeremy Ashcraft.
Indiana Main Street program manager Shae Kmicikewycz, herself a former Logan’s Landing director, said there were currently 108 Main Street organizations across the state but there are other groups interested in joining.
The awards brought home by Logan’s Landing were among nine handed out on Thursday in Kokomo, Kmicikewycz said.
Walton’s Main Street organization also received an award for community impact for the work the group had been done in painting buildings downtown.
“The awards really highlight what our communities are doing,”
Kmicikewycz said. “It gives the opportunity for people to showcase things they are doing well.”
