Filings in: Three Republican primaries

Heads of county GOP, Democrats say they’re pleased with response

LOGANSPORT — Cass County Republicans will cast ballots in three races in the May 8 primary, while Democrats will vote on who to send to the state convention.

Among Republicans, incumbent Cass County Treasurer Dawn Conner-Kraud will take on challenger Kathy Adair.

Republicans Brent Kelley, Sherman Kantzer and Ralph Anderson will vie for the Cass County Commissioner District 1 seat being vacated by Gene Powlen.

Four more Republicans will compete for three available positions on the fall ballot for Cass County Council. George Stebbins Jr., Jeff LaDonne, Stacey Donato and Ed Lucy will face off for a chance to represent the party in that race.

“We’re really happy that we have so many qualified candidates,” said Tom Weatherwax, vice chairman of the county Republican Party. His wife, Kay, is chairwoman.

The three winners of the Republican at-large primary will face at least two Democrats — Terry Homburg and Scott Peattie.

Republicans have filled the rest of the ballot, with a candidate for each of the available local positions in the Nov. 6 general election.

“We definitely, as chairmen, want to have the best candidates and a full slate of candidates because we think that’s our responsibility,”

Weatherwax said. “The primary is usually a very difficult time because it places a small divide in the party. ... But once, the primary is over, all bets are off, and we support those who are heading to the general election.”

Currently, Democrats also have Randy Rozzi running for coroner and Timothy Banter Sr. running for the District 2 county commissioner’s seat.

“We’ll see more names, I’m sure, get on the ballot,” said Paul Ulerich, chairman of the county Democrat Party, referring to each party’s ability to place a name in races they do not already have a candidate in. “I am happy with the candidates we have. It’s very encouraging.”

For Cass Circuit Court judge, Democrat Leo Burns will defend his position against former Cass Superior Court Judge Douglas Cox.

Incumbent Republican Cass Superior Court 2 Judge Rick Maughmer is the only candidate for his position from both parties.

In local races for state positions, Kerry “Worly” Worthington will run unopposed in the District 23 state representative primary and will take on incumbent Republican Bill Friend in November. State Sen. Randy Head, a Republican, will run unopposed for his District 18 seat.

The Cass County Democrats have 16 people who want to be a party delegate at the state convention. Voters will get to choose 12 of them.

They are Matt Meagher, Timothy Banter Sr., Timothy Banter Jr., Julian Pugh, Linda Pugh, Elizabeth Troxell, Mary Kay Fincher, Michael Fincher, Linda Klinck, David Klinck, Billy Friskey, Sue Shannon, Kerry Worthington, Dorita Musselman, James Musselman and Jennifer Marshall.

Ulerich said this surge of people interested in the state convention, and at recent party meetings where upwards of 40 people have attended, is a direct result of how Republicans are running county and city government.

“The people showing up at the meetings are not only the usual folks that we see,” he said. “This is what happens when you have a one-party government or a one-party system.”
