The teenager who struck a semi head-on Monday night remains hospitalized with his family at his side.
Fred Reid, the father of 19-year-old Fredrick A. Reid of Camden, said physicians had told the family that Fredrick was stable as of Tuesday night and should make a full recovery.
“The doctor told us it is remarkable that he lived,” Fred said while choking back tears.
Since the crash, Fredrick has undergone treatment for numerous injuries while in the intensive care unit at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. The elder Reid said his son spent several hours in surgery Tuesday.
At 11:55 p.m. Monday, emergency personnel responded to the report of a crash on the curve along Ind. 25 at Clymers.
According to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, the teenager had been traveling north on Ind. 25 when his vehicle veered left of center and collided with a southbound semi driven by 31-year-old Cameron J. Martin of Logansport.
The impact tore the cab of Fredrick’s 1995 GMC Sierra pickup from its frame.
Assistant chief Dave Huff said when Logansport firefighters arrived on the scene, the frame, including the engine and bed of the truck, was off the road while the cab rested on the highway several feet away.
Firefighters used hydraulic tools to free Fredrick from the wreckage.
Huff reported that the victim’s leg had become lodged in the firewall of the truck.
Fred said his son underwent reconstructive surgery on his head, which suffered a severe gash. Doctors also placed pins in his crushed ankle.
Fredrick is able to communicate with his family by writing notes, his dad reported. He is also using thumbs up or down to answer questions from nurses about his level of pain.
The elder Reid said he was not sure why his son crossed the center line. He said he did not know whether fatigue played a factor in the crash. His son had just left Indiana Packers in Delphi, a place he had worked about a week. He said his son might also have swerved to miss a deer.
Deputies took measurements at the scene for purposes of reconstructing the accident. The investigation is ongoing.
