A concert to benefit victims of the January earthquake in Haiti raised more than $600.
“It was just a great night,” said concert organizer Lindsey Nash.
She said Saturday night’s six-hour event drew more than 100 people and raised exactly $645.50.
“We counted the money last night and announced the total to the crowd,” Nash said.
Nash organized “Rockin’ Out for Haiti” after hearing about aftershocks from the Haiti earthquake. Her husband, Alex, plays in a band called “Aftershock,” and Nash felt it might be appropriate for the band to help in raising money for earthquake victims.
The concert featuring four local bands had originally been scheduled for Feb. 20 but was canceled because of scheduling conflicts at McHale Performing Arts Center, but after a newspaper story about the event, Marilyn Werst, owner of Boondockers, offered up her building as a location.
In addition to Aftershock, the concert featured the Twisted Riddlers, Rudebarb and the Beggars and Isolated Incident.
All the proceeds will go to Music for Relief, a organization founded by the band Linkin Park.
According to its Web site, www.musicforrelief.org, Music for Relief is working to support immediate relief with food, water and emergency medical supplies as well as long-term housing for the people affected by the earthquake. The fund is a partnership with the United Nations Foundation’s Central Emergency Response Fund, Habitat for Humanity and Dave Matthews BAMA Works Haitian relief efforts.
