Republicans take center stage

Congressional forum in Kokomo

Republican Party candidates seeking seats in Congress will answer select questions Tuesday at a forum sponsored by the Kokomo Tea Party.

The candidate forum will take place at the Kokomo Event Center. House candidates for the 2nd and 5th districts will answer questions from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Senate candidates will follow from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The Kokomo Tea Party organizing committee received questions from tea party members and will ask six designed questions of all the candidates.

Each candidate will be allowed to make opening and closing remarks and have allotted time to answer each of the questions. There will be no questions from the audience.

Organizers have requested that candidates be available before and after the forum to talk with those in attendance.

Craig Dunn, chairman of the Howard County Republican Party, said he supports what the tea party is doing.

“These are people fed up enough to take real strong action,” he said. “I don’t have a problem with our people that share their views from being there.”

Dunn noted the tea party is not affiliated with either political party and is an independent organization.

As of Friday, none of the Democratic Party candidates will be at the forum. Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Granger, indicated he will be in Washington. Nassar Hanna, seeking the 5th District nomination, also will be in Washington. Hanna’s 5th District opponent, Tim Crawford, had not respond to the tea party invitation.

Republican senatorial candidates Don Bates Jr., Richard Behney and Marlin Stutzman will be in attendance. Former Sen. Dan Coats and former Rep. John Hostettler did not respond to the invitation.

In the 2nd Congressional District, all three GOP candidates, Martin Dolan, Jack Jordan and Jackie Walorski, have indicated they will be at the forum.

Six of the seven candidates seeking the 5th District nomination will be at the forum. Attending will be Ann Adcock, Andy Lyons, John McGoff, Brose McVey, Luke Messer and Michael Murphy.

Fifth District Incumbent Dan Burton said he will be in Washington and will be unable to attend. But throughout the campaign, Burton has said he would not attend forums with his opponents.

Burton has held town hall meetings with constituents and met with business owners. He invited his opponents to attend one of his town hall meetings last week in Tipton.
