The county has signed a road remediation agreement for work to be done on the Hoosier Heartland Corridor.
County commissioners signed on to an agreement with Chicago-based contractor Walsh Construction Monday. Walsh will be handling the majority of the road construction work for segment three of the Hoosier Heartland.
Cass County Highway Superintendent Steve Easley told commissioners the agreement had to do with wear and tear on county roads as the construction company uses dirt from borrow pits near Clymers for the corridor.
“They are very professional and very cognizant of issues we may have,” Easley said. “We will be taking videos and pictures of the county roads to monitor damage.”
Easley said officials at Walsh outlined specific routes for their trucks and agreed to handle any issues that arise from the construction. He said repair work would happen throughout the project rather than at the corridor’s conclusion.
The project, and the agreement, hinged on a case appealed to the Cass County Board of Zoning Appeals to use dirt from the proposed borrow pits nearby.
“We’re in total support of what they’re doing out there with the borrow pits,” Easley said. “That road needs to get done.”
The agreement for road remediation is in the area of county roads 400 West and 600 West.
“Our intent is to protect the citizens and the road network that the county has,” Easley said. “Because those trucks will do damage.”
