Fire causes little damage to home

Firefighters manage to contain flames to attic

A home in the northwest corner of Logansport sustained little damage in a fire Wednesday.

Just before noon, the Logansport Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1480 Holland St. near the New Waverly Fire Department’s Logansport station.

Assistant fire chief Mike Woolington said that when firefighters arrived, there was smoke coming from the eaves of the house.

“We assumed the fire was in the attic,” he said.

They first attacked the fire from the home’s gable vents, he said.

“When we did, we saw some flames where the insulation was,” he added.

The firefighters eventually had to open the roof from the inside of the house, but Woolington said the house sustained only minimal damage — as the fire was contained to the attic.

Woolington said the hardest part about fighting Wednesday’s fire was getting hose to the home.

“There was a large distance between the home and the nearest hydrant,” Woolington said.

Firefighters had to lay 1,150 feet of hose.

The house is owned by Constance and Kline Sprague, but they don’t actually live in the home.

One of the homeowners, however, was at the house when the fire started. They were reportedly replacing fuses in a fuse box when they smelled smoke.

Woolington said the fire was electrical in nature and had been ruled accidental.

The homeowners said the fire could have been much worse and that they were planning to replace the roof this summer anyway.
