Being twins, Scott Stebbins and Suzanne Bamberger were obviously born on the same day. Forty-seven years later, on Dec. 12, 2012, they shared another significant date together — the marriages to their spouses.
For Scott, it began about a decade ago when he reunited with a high school acquaintance online. Melissa, or Missy, as many are known to call her, was living outside of Indianapolis at the time.
It was a chatroom for Indiana residents and Missy thought she’d see if there was a chance anyone was from her hometown.
“Is anyone from Logansport?” she typed into the chatroom.
Scott replied that he was and it didn’t take long for the two to realize that not only were they from the same town, but that they shared the same group of friends in high school as well.
“We ran with the same crowds, but it seemed like we were never in the same place at the same time.” Missy said.
Scott remembered it similarly.
“We hung around the same people, but we never really hung around them at the same time because she would be out with them early, but I worked, so I wouldn’t be out with them until late,” Scott said. “And I was real shy.”
When Missy returned to the Logansport area to take care of her parents, whose health was ailing, she and Scott began dating. She praised Scott for the support he gave during her parents’ illnesses and when they passed away.
“For anyone to stick out a relationship like that with two ill parents, it really is a match made in heaven,” Missy said. “He’s a very good man.”
A few years later, Scott’s twin, Suzanne, was making plans to marry her current husband Robert in Chiefland, Fla.
“Scott used to tease me that if I ever got married again, he would get married, otherwise he wasn’t going to,” Suzanne said with a laugh.
What began as brotherly teasing soon transformed into a double wedding in Chiefland on Dec. 12, 2012.
Scott said that the idea of getting married on a date of repeating numbers had always intrigued him and Missy.
“We started at 8-8-08, 9-9-09, 10-10-10 and I kept pushing it back, but she wouldn’t let me push it back to 13-13-13,” Scott said with a smile. “So basically, we knew that 12-12-12 was the last year you could do that.”
What resulted was a Christmas-themed, candle-lit ceremony in which attendees were encouraged to bring dishes in lieu of gifts. Scott and Suzanne’s father walked both Suzanne and Missy down the aisle, something Missy said she was very appreciative of.
“I’m so impressed by the family I’ve come into,” Missy said. “I’m very blessed.”
Long before their double wedding, the twins said they had a close relationship growing up and going through school together. This bond, they said, has remained with them throughout their adult years.
“We’ve always had a special connection,” Suzanne said. “He could get away with things that I would not let anybody else get away with.”
Suzanne went on to recall a time when Scott had used a collection of towels — a wedding gift from Suzanne’s first marriage — to wash his car, a story the soft-spoken Scott only responded to by giving a sheepish grin.
“I would’ve killed anybody else for doing that,” Suzanne said, “but he got away with it.”
In a little less than a year, the two couples will celebrate their first anniversaries. Suzanne said that the plan as of now is to have Scott and Missy back to Florida so that they can all share the top tier of the cake from the wedding.
“We’re going to thaw it out and see if it’s edible,” Suzanne said, again with a laugh.
