The Cass County Government Building suffered water damage and some electrical problems after Saturday night’s heavy thunderstorms.
Rain water flowed in through the entrance, causing damage to carpet and one computer.
Commissioner Dave Arnold said an inch of water traveled throughout the first floor, reaching as far as 55 feet from the entrance.
“It went into the security, clerk, treasurer and auditor’s offices,” he said. “Fortunately most of the floor is tile.”
Arnold said the flooding was a result of the heavy rainfall combined with the location of the building.
“Fourth Street is slightly more elevated than the entrance,” he said.
“When there’s that much rain, it won’t be able to drain properly.
That’s how it got into the building.”
Arnold said that most of the water had been mopped up, but he said the carpet would need professional cleaning.
“We are going to get that cleaned up immediately to keep moisture from spreading or the carpet from producing mold,” he said.
He said he wasn’t sure of the cost for the cleanup.
In the meantime, he said, county officials and the county highway department are looking for ways to prevent such flooding in the future.
“There needs to be a way to keep water out — the tile just isn’t doing it,” said commissioner James Sailors. “The entrance may have to be elevated to keep this from happening again.”
