State police are asking motorists to comply with a new ban on left turns from U.S. 24 onto Logansport Road.
“Particular lanes at that location are blocked, and if it’s posted, it is the law,” said Tony Slocum, public information officer for the Peru post of the Indiana State Police.
Slocum said the lane was eliminated for safety purposes.
Slocum said he had worked a few fatal crash at the intersection.
“One fatal crash is too many, and we’ve had more than one,” he said.
Matt Deitchley, media relations director for the LaPorte district of the Indiana Department of Transportation, said the change came as a result of a study by INDOT engineers.
“The turn onto Logansport Road is not a 90-degree turn, which requires additional safety measures,” Deitchley said. “They wanted to make sure people were making it safely.”
Local officials were not notified of the change, something Sheriff Randy Pryor said he wasn’t happy about. Pryor said he first learned of the change when he responded to a crash at the intersection.
Jeff Smith, superintendent with the Cass County Highway Department, said he was told, when he contacted INDOT, that the change was intended to allow more room for people to safely cross the median.
Smith said he had received no complaints.
“There are county roads before and after where people could turn,” he said. “Hopefully it will have the desired effect and less car wrecks will be caused.”
