Vice President Al Gore has stunned political observers by turning to Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut senator, to be his running mate.

Lieberman’s moderate political positions and his opposition to President Clinton’s personal conduct are viewed as strengths. Mike Scagnoli is in second place as the city golf tourney at Dykeman Park Municipal Golf Course continues.

“Space Cowboys” is playing at the State.

Fire has damaged the pro shop at Pond View Golf Course in Thornhope.

Rochester merchants deadlocked in a 7-7 tie on a vote for the official Round Barn Festival site downtown. None of the merchants oppose the fest, but some say the location can potentially hurt their business.

Former Illinois quarterback Dave Wilson wants to be traded from the New Orleans Saints who now have a native Louisianan, Bobby Hebert, for a quarterback.

America had a $33.4 billion trade deficit in the recent quarter. Duane Bickett of USC may be signed by the Colts soon. He is the team’s draft pick and is a linebacker.

50 Years Ago

Esta McKee of Royal Center has won the national and world women’s horseshoe pitching championships. McKee flung 38 ringers in the deciding championship round, besting the runnerup from Morgantown, W. Va. The championship was held in Muncie. After winning the state women’s softball championship with a 1-0

win over Boonville, the Logansport Loganettes defeated Kewaunee, the Illinois state champ, 6-0, in Indianapolis, to advance to the second round of the regional tournament.

In a melee between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs, Reds’ infielder Billy Martin slugged Cubs’ southpaw Jim Brewer and was suspended and fined $500. Cubs’ ownership maintained former Logansport Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis would have tossed Martin out of baseball for throwing a bat at Brewer and landing a blow that put Brewer in reconstructive surgery for three hours.

The first Cass County 4-H Fair grand champion steer has sold for $548.

“The Apartment” starring Fred MacMurray, Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine is playing at the Monticello Drive-In.

“Dick the Bruiser” of Delphi will be wrestling at the Kokomo Speedway.

In an unusual move, the Detroit Tigers have traded a coach, Luke Appling, to the Cleveland Indians for another coach, JoJo White.

A place for horses to drink has been established at Front and Vandalia streets.

D.E. Hervey on North Street has applied for a patent for a locomotive stoking device.

A new sewer is being laid beneath portions of Sycamore Street that are about to be paved on the north side.

The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety has approved the installation bricks on Fifth Street.

A horse was taken from the Elks and found five miles outside the city.

Harold Shideler traveled nearly 2,900 miles in his new automobile before sustaining the first tire puncture.

Twenty-three brakemen have been hired by the Panhandle Railroad. Ellis Bush has reopened a blacksmith shop on Fifth Street. The James Sprinkle threshers harvested 15,700 bushels in under six hours near Galveston.

Elmer Mathews of the Panhandle has purchased a new Brush automobile.
