Esta McKee of Royal Center has won the national and world women’s horseshoe pitching championships. McKee flung 38 ringers in the deciding championship round, besting the runnerup from Morgantown, W. Va. The championship was held in Muncie. After winning the state women’s softball championship with a 1-0
win over Boonville, the Logansport Loganettes defeated Kewaunee, the Illinois state champ, 6-0, in Indianapolis, to advance to the second round of the regional tournament.
In a melee between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs, Reds’ infielder Billy Martin slugged Cubs’ southpaw Jim Brewer and was suspended and fined $500. Cubs’ ownership maintained former Logansport Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis would have tossed Martin out of baseball for throwing a bat at Brewer and landing a blow that put Brewer in reconstructive surgery for three hours.
The first Cass County 4-H Fair grand champion steer has sold for $548.
