It was a game that had a little bit of everything — a player in the zone, clutch free throws, a great comeback and a crazy finish.
When the smoke had cleared, Logansport’s boys basketball team was able to continue its recent stranglehold of the county championship.
The Berries pulled out a 57-56 win in a thrilling conclusion to the boys Logansport Savings Bank Invitational Friday night in the Berry Bowl. It was the Berries’ fifth county championship in a row.
Jayson Higgins scored 24 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to lead the Berries (4-0). The 6-foot-2 senior shot 6 of 8 from 3-point range in the second half.
Antonio Penny finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals for Logan. Todd Yeoman and Bo Bullard added six points apiece. Nate Bullard hit the game-winning free throw with 32.8 seconds left.
Sophomore Carter Skaggs led the Panthers (1-2) with 14 points and five boards. Mitchell Williams, just seven weeks removed from having surgery to repair a fractured and dislocated wrist, added 13 points. Brandon Scruggs scored 12, including a 3-pointer that gave the Panthers a 56-55 lead with 1:20 left to play after they had trailed 54-44 with 4:00 to go. Matt Dorris had 11 points, and Clayton Harvey added six points and three blocks.

The Logansport, Lewis Cass and Pioneer girls track teams made the long trek to Madison-Grant High School for action in the 2013 Madison-Grant sectional. Several area girls had successful nights and will be advancing to regional action.

An abundance of the former and a lack of the latter made the difference in Monday night’s softball matchup between the Logansport Berries and the Lewis Cass Lady Kings. -

FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Panthers end Warriors’ MWC title streak in boys golf
Pioneer’s boys golf team took down Midwest Conference stalwart Winamac at the conference meet at Pond View G.C. on Friday.
The Panthers defeated the Warriors by five strokes, 338-343. The Panthers won their first MWC title since 2002. -
